About the Doctor

Shashi Ganti, MD

Dr. Ganti is an American board-certified, fellowship-trained Retina and Cornea specialist. He graduated with honors from Andhra Medical College of Andhra University, Waltair, India. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook University Hospital, and his Ophthalmology Residency at John H. Stroger Jr., Cook County Health and Hospital System, Chicago, Illinois.

He subsequently completed his Fellowship training in Retina and Vitreous Surgery with Orellana Retina Associates / Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, and was a co-investigator for FDA studies on the use of silicon oil in complex retinal detachment surgery.

Dr. Ganti worked as a research fellow at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary with Prof. Gholam Peyman — a US Congressional Gold medalist — conducting research on the application of continuous wave YAG laser for retinal photocoagulation, which paved the way for present-day lasers that are a cornerstone of therapy for Diabetic Retinopathy.

Prior to his Retina Fellowship, Dr. Ganti completed Fellowship training in Cornea and External Disease at the University of Rochester School of Medicine with Prof. James V. Aquavella. He has served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the Jewish Hospital and Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY, Attending Sub-Specialist at the Catholic Medical Center / Cornell University, NY, and Attending Surgeon at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

He served as the sole Retina Specialist and Surgeon in Porterville, Central California for more than a decade, and was a Principal Investigator for the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net) Protocols A, AB, and W. He has published articles in peer-reviewed medical journals on corneal and retinal disease and surgery.

His other interests include international medical missionary projects in Mexico, El Salvador, China, Taiwan, Africa, and India. He is married with two children and enjoys his free time with family and friends.

In His Own Words

"

Clinical research has been a passion throughout my training and career. In Ophthalmology, it began under the mentorship of Professor Gholam Peyman, a prominent scientist and US Congressional Gold medalist, at University of Illinois, Chicago. Our work in developing the continuous wave YAG laser for Retinal photocoagulation paved the way for present day lasers that are a cornerstone of therapy for Diabetic Retinopathy.

My interest in public health grew during the height of the AIDS epidemic, when with Prof. Juan Orellana at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, we became one of the first investigators to begin treating patients with direct intravitreal pharmaceutical agents for AIDS related CMV retinitis.

I had the pleasure of serving in a health care shortage area in Porterville, located in Central California, where I was the sole Retina Specialist and Surgeon for more than a decade. Presently, I am affiliated with Mission Valley Eye Medical Center, and established my clinic in 2147 Mowry ave. Suite D1, Fremont, CA.
